"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

TGIF...YEAH! Or Is It JSMTM? (Just Show Me the Money!)

Well, we've made it through another week, and as the weekend beckons we have one more day of leads to pursue in the job search.  Stay motivated and assertive, no matter the challenges that come your way.  Nothing good comes without sacrifice and perseverance, and the job search can be just like that for many of us!
  • Here is a website that lists US government jobs:  http://www.usajobs.gov/ .  Check it out to see if you qualify for any of the positions.  You'll have to search by either location or keyword.  For our area, I recommend you search York, Harrisburg, Carlisle, and New Cumberland, at the very least.  It could be a great tool, especially if the prospect of relocating doesn't bother you.  And remember all the good benefits of having a government job!

Happy Thursday...Only One More Day to Go

Graduates, remember that at CSB we offer on-going career services support.  Thus, no matter how long you've been out of school we (or I for that matter) will review your resume, help you with cover letters, and provide assistance with the job search.  It is my job to do so.  Obviously, the onus of the search is still yours, but I'm here to help in any way I possibly can.

Without further ado, here are today's job search links:

Good-day, Mates! It's Tuesday...Almost!

OK, so I planned to post this tomorrow, but I just couldn't wait because there seem to be some great opportunities here.  Remember, Harrisburg isn't that far away, and if commuting for a while, until you can get a job closer to York, is what it takes to build experience, then you'll be happier in the long run.  A job is always better than unemployment, right?

Tuesday's leads from this weekend's Pennlive:

Happy Monday!

I know, I know...it's still a Monday, no matter how hard we try!

Here are some leads to begin your week, though.

Friday's Leads

My apologies for the delay in today's post...it's been crazy coming back from one day out of the office.

The good news from my conference experience is that I hope to do more with social media (e.g. Facebook) to communicate with you, the students and job seekers.  But that's down the road...

Without further ado, here are today's links!
Now go get 'em!     TGIF and fin de semana to all!

Happy Thursday! We're Over the Hump!

Listed below are some of the jobs for today.  Please note that I have been putting down related jobs within a 30-40 mile radius of York.  I know that some of you don't relish the idea of commuting to work, but realize that York only has so many jobs.  Some of the surrounding areas are more "job-dense," thus allowing greater opportunity to break into your field.  Please understand that you could temporarily take a job outside of York and keep looking locally.  Remember, it's always easier to get a job when you have another one.  Plus, you'll be adding to your experience and "employability."  In other words, a temporary sacrifice could certainly pay dividends in the future.

Way to Go, Katherine!

Congratulations to Katherine Miller!  Katherine got hired as a medical receptionist!  Great job!

A Few More Leads...

Tuesday's Leads

Recent York County Postings on CWDS (CareerLink site):  http://www.cwds.state.pa.us/
  • Administrative Assistant
  • Retail Convenience Store Manager
  • Bilingual customer service
Note:  It is difficult to link to CWDS jobs; thus, these three listings are not links.  You will need to go to the CWDS website to apply.  And remember, there are typically two steps to applying through that site...be sure you do both/all steps!

Other postings (from Pennlive.com):
I recognize that most of these positions are in the Harrisburg area, but some of you might need to "branch out" more in your search.  Unfortunately, York County just doesn't have as much business and opportunity as Dauphin or Cumberland County.  Likewise, just south of the Mason Dixon Line lie job-rich areas in Westminster, Hunt Valley, Timonium, Towson, and northern Baltimore.  Making a sacrifice with travel for a while could give you the experience you need to break into your field locally.  It's a better choice than no job and not building experience.  Just a thought...a thought that could change your life for the better!

Three Items

1)  Craigslist Warning:  Just a "heads up" that a recent Craigslist ad, which I advertised on this blog, appears to be a scam.  It was for an medical secretary/front desk position at a "busy accupuncture office."  Some respondents to the ad received an email in reply, asking them to provide information about their bank account for "direct deposit."

Obviously, Craigslist is a valid source for potential jobs.  Otherwise, I wouldn't list openings from that site.  We have even had students earn legitimate positions found on that site.  But there are also "sharks" advertising on there, fishing for your information.  So you must be careful.  Do not disclose your bank account information, social security information, etc to someone who hasn't interviewed you in person (at a legitimate place of business) and offered you the job.  Sending your resume to apply through Craigslist isn't all that problematic as most of the information on your resume can probably be obtained online anyway (your name, address, phone number, etc).

This doesn't mean you need to--or even should--stop using Craigslist as a job seeker's tool.  It just means you need to be wise and vigilant in its use.  Trust your common sense!

2)  More openings:
3)  Medical Assistants--There is a position offered at Hanover Orthopaedic Associates for a Medical Assistant.  Requires ability to work front and back office, doing medical assistant clinical duties as well as transcription/proofreading.  Must have good grammar and give attention to detail.  Knowledge of EMR a plus  (Hint, hint:  Medisoft!).      Email resumes and tailored cover letter to steph@hanoverortho.com .

Today's Links and Leads

Here are some leads from the CareerLink website:
Remember that there are two steps to follow if you apply for a position through the CareerLink website. First, do the application through the website.  Then, and this is extremely important, you must follow the second step you are directed to do, whether it is to apply on the company website, send a resume to a specific address, or call a certain phone number.  Be sure to do both steps!

You Gotta Shake the Tree to Get Them Apples Down!

1)  Keep your head up and keep working hard in the job search.  Even if you are in the midst of internship, it is important to keep getting your resume out there and networking to develop leads.  It's like I've said in class many times...you need to shake a few trees if you want some apples to fall.

A Few Leads for Today!

Here's a medical billing lead from Craigslist.com:
                 Medical Billing lead

Additionally, on the CareerLink website, there are some listings that might interest COM and BAM majors.  There is a clerical position that appears to be for a trucking company in Hanover.  Additionally, there are some business-related positions, including a Recruiter and a Production Coach position available in Lewisberry, probably at Fed-Ex, though the company isn't named.  Those seem like good opportunities to utilize management, supervision, and human resource skills learned in classes here at CSB.  Check out these opportunities and more on the CareerLink site at http://www.cwds.state.pa.us/ .  And remember, a job in hand is always worth two on a website...
