"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

My Pentultimate Blog and Leads List

As some of you may know, I have taken another job in education and will be leaving CSB after January 4, 2013.  Thus, the duties of maintaining a blog for you CSB grads and job seekers will fall to my very capable replacement, Lindsay Unger.  Interestingly enough, Lindsay is a CSB graduate, who then went on to get her bachelor's degree.  I feel very good about leaving my students--those of you who have graduated--and the current CSB students with Lindsay, for I know you will be in very good hands.

Additionally, if I have served as a reference for you, and you would like to keep me as a reference, please contact me with a private message in Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/tim.csbyorkcampus) or by sending me an email at tbarshinger@csb.edu (before January 4, 2013), and I will share my new contact information.  I am more than willing to remain a reference and to continue supporting you in your career.

Please note that will post a final blog posting tomorrow, simply to create a link to Lindsay's job seekers' blog.

It has been my pleasure to work with all of you during my tenure at CSB.  I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the opportunity to meet and work with so many interesting people.  The experience has taught me, enlightened me, challenged me, and fulfilled me.  I thank all of you for sharing a little part of yourselves in the process.

And now...why you have all come here...Wednesday's Leads:
My sincere wishes for career success and a lifetime of happiness to you!

Two Congratulations and Monday's Leads

Before we jump into Monday's Leads, I wanted to take a moment to congratulate two CSB graduates on new jobs.

First, congratulations to Tiffany Poe!  Tiffany found out last week that she is getting hired by her internship site and will be working as a medical office secretary!

Next, congratulations are also extended to Charla Kohler.  Charla is the prime example of perseverance paying off.  She has worked in a number of jobs that weren't her "dream job," but she kept plugging away and just found out last week that she has gotten a full time job as a medical assistant.  None of that would have been possible if Charla hadn't kept trying...or if she had given up on her dream.

Way to go, Ladies!  We're very proud of you!

Monday's Leads:

Have a wonderful Monday afternoon!  Let's kick off a good week!

What's in Your Heart: Friday's Leads

So here we stand, poised on the threshold to December, looking at the holidays that lie ahead.  Whether you celebrate Christmas or some other holiday this season, this quotation really captures the essence of what we all need to strive for as humans:  kindness and compassion.  So what's in your heart?

"Remember, if Christmas isn't found in your heart, you won't find it under a tree."
~ Charlotte Carpenter.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Yes, we're almost to the big day!  This picture combines two of my favorite elements of Thanksgiving:  football and turkey!

With that in mind, I want to wish all of you a very happy holiday!  May you take time to reflect on all we have to be thankful for, and may you get to spend some time with those you love.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Staring Down Adversity

As we look for jobs and encounter adversity, it is very easy to feel frustrated or angry, even resentful of the world that seems so set against us.  That is a normal human reaction, and it stems from a natural defense mechanism in our pysche, which helps to protect us when we feel "unwanted" or "unneeded."

The question, though, is how we react to that adversity.  Do we take it personally and get angry at the world?  Do we feel overwhelmed and give up?  Or do we accept it as a challenge, a temporary setback, that we WILL overcome by continuing to forge ahead.  Remember, the most satisfying accomplishments are not the ones that come easily but those that we earn.

So what are you doing when adversity stands in your way?  How you react will make all the difference!

Monday's Leads

"Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later."
                                                 Og Mandino

I love this quotation, for I believe that it speaks to the control we have over our lives.  Likewise, I'm a big believer in the notion that we can build--or, in this case "plant"--for the future.

So the question, then, is what are you planting for tomorrow?

Monday's Leads:

Have a great Monday!  And, hey, it's a short week!  Only a few days until Turkey Day and all the good food!

Friday's Leads--and a Review of "Tell Me About Yourself"

"Tell Me About Yourself"--The opening interview question...

We all know that question is coming, and we sometimes dread it all the same.  It's a dangerous question for sure, and some people find themselves thinking, "What do they want to know?  What should I say?"

Honestly, what you say is up to you as long as it meets a few criteria:

  1. It must be business oriented.  Do not include personal information that is irrelevant to the job.  Sure, it's great that you have collected every Beanie Baby known to man, but that doesn't make you a good candidate for a job!
  2. Tailor your answer to the job description of the job for which you are interviewing.  Remember, you are there to "sell" yourself as THE candidate for that job.  Show them why you fit the bill!
  3. You shouldn't talk too much.  Aim for 30 seconds to 2 minutes for an appropriate window.  You want to get the interview off on the right foot and establish that you are a good candidate, but you don't want to ramble.
So, what can I include?   Include elements of any of the following, preferably in a way that demonstrates how each helps to qualify you for the position:  previous work history (make connections to your transferable skills), soft skills that help qualify you for the job, your education and training, and relevant volunteer activities.

To help you "see" what it looks like, here is a good example:

Remember, you can make or break your interview with the Tell Me About Yourself question.  Thus, prepare well and get your interview off on the right foot!

Thursday's Leads

We had an advisory board luncheon yesterday at our school, and some of the advisory board members who came shared some important details about their hiring practices.  Here are two vital points of our discussion that I can share with you:

  1. Lock down  / clean up your social media accounts...many employers are looking at social media as a "first line" screening method.
  2. If you have issues that are barriers to your employment--a termination, a criminal record, etc--be upfront and honest about it when asked.  All the employers said they were very unhappy when people didn't take responsibility for their mistakes.

Have a great day!
