"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

Trust Yourself...And Go That Final 5%

How many of those roadkill animals that we see, but especially squirrels, have fallen victim to this kind of behavior?  I'm willing to bet it is quite a few!

That kind of behavior or thinking is also dangerous--though certainly not to the same degree--in our job search strategies.  It hearkens back to an article we discuss in Self Awareness classes, "How to Get Out of Your Own Way."  Many of us doubt ourselves or carry out other behaviors that are detrimental to our ability to "sell ourselves" as the best candidate.  I'm sure that all of us have been in interview situations and said or did something, even something small, that gave the interviewer the wrong impression and was akin to that squirrel turning back.  Most of these behaviors are rooted in our own fears and self-doubts, so we can overcome them.  We just need to trust ourselves and forge ahead across that final 5% of road.  It's the only sure way to "safety"...and a more promising future.

Thursday's Leads

As many of you know, this is one of my favorite quotations.  Each time you complete an application or send off a resume or make a cold call, you are preparing to take that first step.

Keep trying to take that first step, even in the face of adversity.  We've had many success stories of people who finally got their breakthrough, just when they thought all was lost.  So keep trying!  You will get nowhere without it!

Have a great day!

Way to Go, Ana!

Congratulations to Ana Saez for getting a job as a legal assistant with a federal government agency!

I know that there were times in the last few months when she felt frustrated as she was passed over for people with more experience, but her persistence and and never-say-die attitude have paid off!

Well done, Ana!  Well done!

And oh yeah, political correctness is kind of lost on this guy.  Maybe we should all be sure that we're not as dense as he!

Tuesday's Leads--Get Some Perspective

While the picture to the left is humorous, it does illustrate the idea of perspective and how it affects everything.  For example, what looks like a delicious meal to one person, might be a "horror movie" to someone else.  So, too, is it with job search.  Every job we apply to, every interaction we have with a potential employer, every interview or phone call we take has the power to alter our perspective--and that of the potential employer.  Thus, it is important that we as job seekers create the best possible impression, that we are "selling" ourselves as hard working, skilled, and positive candidates.  Likewise, we need to make sure we don't judge potential employers too quickly, that we keep things in the right perspective as well.  Keeping the right perspective is the first step to staying positive and "keeping it real."
Now go get 'em!  Have a great day!

Welcome Back to a New Week

I don't know about you, but this is me on Sunday nights!  It's always a bummer to end a weekend and head into another week, especially when we have weather like we're enjoying now!

So I'll try to get this moving forward...and help us all move on from the misery that is Monday.

Friday Leads--Be a Fighter!

As you move forward in your job search, you can choose to be passive, waiting for things to come to you, or you can choose to be like this kitten and attack that which stands in your way.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday, May 16 Leads

What NOT to say during an interview:

-"My idea of teamwork is a lot of people doing what I tell them to do!"

-"If I'm talking, everyone should be taking notes."

-When asked if he had experience with a certain programming language, the interviewee said, "I don't know, is it on my resume?" while leaning over attempting to look at his own resume

-When asked if there was anything else he wanted to tell the interviewer, the applicant said, "Well, ma'am, I ain't never killed nobody before."

And without further ado, the leads...

Have a great day!

Friday's Leads

It's very easy to get wrapped up in things that are out of our control.  Every day, we are confronted with situations that frustrate and anger us.  It is how we react to them that makes all the difference.  Do we let them get us down?  Do we let them paralyze us and prevent us from acting?  The answer always lies within us...we always hold the key.  I'm choosing to focus on the things I can control...the rest isn't up to me.

What will you do?

Have a wonderful weekend!
