"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

Don't Forget the Employment Agencies as a Resource

NOTE:   Good morning!  As I am off tomorrow, today's blog will be the last posting for this week.  Check back on Monday for additional blog postings that are chock-full of leads!

I've been talking to some local staffing / employment agencies as of late, and I wanted to remind all of you to utilize those services as part of your job search process.  Remember that many staffing agencies hire not only temporary workers but also direct hire or temp-to-hire employees.  Furthermore, it could be a good way to earn some money in the interval between finishing your schooling and gaining full time employment.  Plus, you never know when one of these jobs, even if it isn't a direct hire position, could lead you into a job that you really like.  And you'll be building positive work experience and developing contacts that could help even more down the road!  That is, after all, the power of networking.

Thursday and Friday's Leads

Have a great day--and enjoy your weekend!  I'll be posting again next week!

Recognizing Opportunity: Monday's Leads

Back to work, back to school...the grind of another week begins.  However, we need to see the opportunity inherent in a new week ahead.  And we should remember the words of Charles Swindel:
We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations.

It is always what we make of any situation that determines its outcome.  It is ALWAYS up to us!

Monday's Leads:
Have a great day...and an even better week!

Thank You Notes--And Wednesday's Leads

One of the job search skills most often neglected is the thank you note.  In a challenging job market, candidates need to find ways to help separate themselves from other candidates, and the thank you note is one possible means to help you achieve that goal.  Given that many job seekers do not take the time to write and send thank you notes, doing so can be a real boon to your interview process.

So what are some key ideas to remember in your thank you note?

  • Always state the position for which you interviewed and the date of your interview.  HR and managers are interviewing dozens of people, so help them narrow it down and improve the chance that they will remember you.
  • Use the space to get in one or two sentences to "sell yourself" one last time.  This technique is most effective if you are "selling" your skills that align you with what the company needs for the open position.
  • Keep it neat and legible.
  • Make it perfect.  Errors are perceived as laziness or inability, so take the time to do it right...and then get someone else to check it.
  • Be sincere.  You should sound appreciative and interested.  Remember, the hiring manager wants to hire someone who wants that job.  Do you sound like you want it?
  • Make it timely.  Ideally, the sooner they get the thank you note, the better.  Generally, you should send out thank yous note within a day or two of the interview.  That is a benefit of sending a thank you note via email...but the gold standard is still the handwritten thank you note.

Put on a Happy Face: Tuesday's Leads

Have you recently thought about how you come across during an interview or a business meeting?  What messages do your face and body language transmit--as a direct link to your thoughts--that might be hurting you and damaging the way others' perceive you?

For you CSB grads and current students, we talk about this point in Self Awareness classes, and I try to get each of you to assess how others perceive you.  So if you've gotten away from assessing yourself in the job search, start paying more attention to your facial expressions, your body language, and the non-verbal cues you're sending out during an interview (or any business interaction).  Are you sending out a vibe that is welcoming and perceived as being "customer friendly"?  Or are you the "angry old man" like Clint in this shot from Grand Turino?

Giving people the right perception--not only through your words but also through your non-verbal communication--is vital.  After all, who wants to hire an angry, depressed, or tempermental employee?

So get out there and show them the happy and personable you that will represent any business with a smile.
Have a great day!

Kicking Off a New Week: Monday's Leads

Well, it's another Monday morning, where we all struggle to get back to the daily grind.  If you're like me, you spent much of this weekend watching football and all the thrills and drama associated with America's favorite game.  It's appropriate, then, that we use that analogy to begin a new week.  So here we stand, ready for the   "game" to begin, awaiting the kickoff.  So let's get it started...and let's kick off a new week!

Have a great week!

Happy Friday: Shake Your Way to a Good Impression

Remember that even the smallest detail can help you make a good--or bad--impression when meeting someone for the first time, particularly in an interview.  Thus, a detail such as the handshake is a vital element toward creating the right first impression.  As such, here are some details to consider to ensure that your handshake is making the grade:

  • Remember that you should always be standing to shake hands.  Sitting and shaking hands is considered disrespectful or lazy.  So if you are sitting, stand up!
  • Generally a firm handshake is viewed as a sign of confidence and respect.  Be sure you give your hand to the interviewer and apply some pressure.  However, this exchange should not be an attempt to squeeze harder than the interviewer, nor is the idea to break any bones!  On the other end of the spectrum, don't give the interviewer your limp hand to skake, either.  You have to apply some pressure lest you are viewed as weak.
  • During the handshake, gently pump your hand up and down once or twice
  • The handshake generally lasts about 2 seconds, so don't go holding on for dear life.  The interviewer's hand is not a life preserver--or your childhood woobi blanket.
  • It is really important that you give eye contact while shaking hands.   Look the interviewer in the eye.  Again, eye contact conveys respect and confidence, two traits that all job seekers should demonstrate.
  • Remember to shake hands again at the end of the interview.  Leave a good final impression.
  • A few other tips you might consider regarding handshakes:  1)  Make sure your hands are clean.  (This should go without saying, but it still needs to be said!)  2)  Make sure your nails are clean and well maintained.  No Freddy Kreuger look-alikes are allowed!

Wednesday's Leads: No Time for What Ifs...

I've written on here rather frequently regarding the need to take risks and "put yourself out there."  This picture to the right captures the essence of that idea incredibly well.  It is better to have tried and failed--"Oh well"--than to have never even had a chance because you were too afraid to try.

Don't let your life be haunted by the "what ifs."

Go get what you deserve.

Have a great day.

Tuesday's Leads: An Ocean of Opportunity

Each day we awaken to an ocean of possibility, but each of us must make the conscious decision to explore that ocean.  It is like the old quotation by Andre Gide:  "Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of shore."

So get out there and discover your "ocean" of opportunity.  Don't be afraid to leave the shore.

Have a great Tuesday!

Another Hump Day to Surmount

Yes, it's that day again...Wednesday...Hump Day!

I found this Hump Day gif and couldn't help but have a little laugh.  I don't know about you, but that's exactly how this Wednesday has made me feel:  as if I've been blindsided.  But hang in there, the weekend is on it's way.  Until then, here are some leads to hold you over.

Have a great day!
