"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

Keep at It!

Don't give up hope!  Survey results from 2009 found the following facts about people looking for jobs:  Those 55 and older took an average of 29.9 weeks to find gainful employment; those under 55 averaged 21.4 weeks (click here for source of data).  And since the economy hasn't improved, I'm sure those numbers are still true two years later!   The bottom line:  In a tough economy, finding a job can take time.  Employers have the luxury to be very selective.  Employers have the luxury of waiting for the right candidate.  And many businesses are "sitting on their hands," not making moves as people retire or are let go.

The important thing is to keep plugging away.  There are sure to be times when you will lose hope and get frustrated or bitter, but the people who succeed in the end, regardless of their field or profession, are those who don't give up.  History has shown time and time again that the people who keep trying are the ones who eventually break through.  Just think of all the inventors and scientists and leaders who have succeeded.  Where would we be if they had given up at the first...or second...or fiftieth failure?

No one will ever achieve anything unless he or she is willing to try and try and try.  Don't let "no" be an answer...keep looking for new ways to get what you want.  Keep trying!

Failure Is a Stepping Stone to Success!

Failure Is a Stepping Stone To SuccessThe is no failure – only feedback. Learn from failures to emerge stronger, and achieve success
"I have not failed 700 times. I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving those 700 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work."

Friday's Leads

First, check out the Fox 43 Job of the day!  It's an administrative assistant for West Shore Windows and Doors in Mechanicsburg, right up 83 and off 581.

Other leads to end your week:
Have a great weekend!  Enjoy Saturday and stay dry on Sunday!

Attention, Medical Students!

I received this job lead from a former student who is working.  I recommend you do a cold call to this place if you are interested.  You can act as if you know nothing about the opening and you are just calling to express an interest.  Here is the text of the email.  Note that it is a part-time position!

I received an email from a Doctor's office that I applied to back in May. I am not interested, but maybe you would have somebody in mind for the position. It is a part time (Mon, Wed, & Fri) front office position at Family Medicine Associates of York, 54 S Forrest St, York, phone 792-1811. The office manager's name is Ellen Essock.

Now put those cold calling skills to work!

A Slew of Leads to Start the Week!

Here's a tip culled from the internet:  Sweat the Small Stuff

“Don’t forget the personal touches,” counsels Felicia Miller, assistant director of career services at the Art Institute of Las Vegas. “Don’t use a template cover letter -- make sure each letter addresses specific skills or qualities the company is looking for. [Obviously, you'll know these qualities/skills from the job listing.]  And always send a thank-you note or email after the interview. Use this correspondence as an opportunity to revisit weak areas of your interview.”

And here are some leads to begin your week!
Let me know if I can be of assistance in applying for any of these!

Medical Assistant Opening

I have received a call for a medical assistant opening at Cancer Care Associates of York.  Please contact me if you’d like to apply as the contact has requested that you send your resume through me.  Please do not call the office inquiring about the position as they are extremely busy!

I’d like to know of your interest by the Monday, if possible, as I plan to send the first round of resumes on Monday by mid-day.

Please note that they did hire a CSB grad there recently, and they were obviously happy with our assistance!  It’s a great opportunity.

Be Confident

During my short tenure here at CSB, one of the problems that has undoubtedly hindered many students in the job search is a lack of self confidence.  Employers can sense it when a candidate lacks self confidence, and they are unlikely to offer a position to someone who seems to need to have his or her hand held.  They want employees who will be independent, sure of themselves, and willing to take calculated risks.  If you find yourself feeling as if you lack confidence, check out this article, entitled "Ten Secrets for Boosting Your Self Confidence During the Job Search," for some tips to help you sell yourself with conviction.  In particular, pay attention to Secrets # 2, 5, 6, 8, and 9, as all of these deal with elements of improving your confidence.

On a related note, I've often shared this with job seekers who lack confidence:  What have you got to lose?  Make it a mantra you repeat to yourself going into the interview:  What have I got to lose?  What have I got to lose?  And it's true as well...you're coming in without a job; the worst that can happen is that you don't get the job.  You have nothing to lose.  Instead, look at the interview situation as an opportunity to do well, a chance to share what you can do and to sell yourself as the best candidate.

So be confident in yourself and your skills!  Getting the job could depend on it!  What have you got to lose? Or, more importantly, what have you got to gain!

Thursday's Leads

Now go get 'em...they're out there waiting for you!

    Take It to the Bank!

    Attention CAM's, COM's, and BAM's:

One area of the business world that some of you might not have considered is banking.  Banking is one area of the economy that has seemed unaffected by the recession, as evidenced by the constant building of banks and credit unions.  Since you have training in accounting, Excel, Quickbooks, and, for some of you, Peachtree, working in a bank might be a move that is right on the money (bad pun intended).  Additionally, there are many positions within banks for which you might be qualified.  Be sure to check the bank websites below, as well as those of other banks, for possible leads you might follow.  Getting a job with a bank offers great opportunities, an excellent work environment, and the chance to help others.  Plus, have you ever met people in a bank who didn't seem happy?  Thus, I urge you to consider banking as an option related to your business training...it could turn out to be something great!  You can bank on it!

    Some area banks with openings:
It's just another way that you need to "think outside the box" during these tough times!

    Don't Lose Hope

The link below is an interesting article outlining one woman's difficult search for a job in this tough economy.  The lessons that come out of this article are as follows:
    1. Use all available avenues/resources.  Don't just apply online.  You should also be doing resume drop offs, cold calls, and employment agency registrations (and follow-ups).
    2. Be proactive and assertive with employment agencies if you register with them (and you should register with several for best results).  Don't let them forget about you!
    3. Don't be afraid to try new things.  Remember this anonymous quotation:  "One cannot discover new oceans if he is afraid to lose sight of shore."
    4. Don't give up, even when you are frustrated and feeling blue.  Unfortunately, the times aren't what they were five or ten years ago when there weren't enough students with degrees for the jobs that were available.  Right now, it's just the opposite.

    Tuesday's Leads

Nothing in life that is worth having or worth doing comes easily.  Don't lose hope when you face adversity.  Rather, use it as yet another hurdle to clear, another obstacle to surmount.  And think of the pride you'll feel when you achieve your goal!  It will all be worthwhile in the end if you achieve what you set out to do!

    Jobs at Amazon!

As per this article in the York Dispatch ("Amazon Hiring in Lewisberry, Carlisle"), Amazon.com is hiring at both its Lewisberry and Carlisle locations.  Since the article stated that there are office and management positions, I checked the site and found the following positions that may be of interest to our grads:
Just thought I'd share these openings after finding the article in the newspaper!  Amazon is a good company that just continues to flourish!

    Congratulations!!!

Congratulations are in order for Samantha Keth and Heather Ritz, two students who are just finishing job search and heading out on internship.  Both ladies just found out today that they have gotten jobs, Sam as a front office/human resource generalist and Heather as a medical assistant.  When combined with Kit Pifer, who got a job recently as a medical secretary, that makes three students who will be working at a job to meet their internship requirements!

Way to go, Ladies!  Make CSB proud!

    Persevere--Keep Trying, Against All Odds

I know that some of you are frustrated with the job search.  Maybe you haven't gotten interviews, or maybe you have had interviews without success, or maybe you're getting no response for the work you are putting into your search.  But giving up cannot be an option.  Sure, there's no doubt that the economy is bleak, and job prospects are tough right now.  But you have to keep trying.  Consider, after all, the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.  “Perseverance is a great element of success. If you only knock long enough and loud enough at the gate, you are sure to wake up somebody.

    Some Leads for Today

Interview Reminder:  Remember to "close" the interview well.  State your interest or desire for the job.  This statement doesn't have to be too bold or pushy; it can be as simple as "I appreciate the opportunity for this interview, and let me re-state my interest in the position.  I know I have the skills to do well in this position, and I would love the opportunity to join your team/practice/company."  Also, be sure you have the interviewer's name (maybe by obtaining a business card) so that you can follow up in the next 24 hours with a thank you note!  Make the final moments of your interview count!  It could be the difference maker!

    A Cornucopia of Opportunities!

Listed below are some great opportunities from Pennlive.com.  Most of these positions are in Harrisburg or the greater-Harrisburg area (Mechanicsburg, Camp Hill, Middletown, Lemoyne, etc). There are at least two positions from York Country, though.   As someone who worked in Harrisburg before coming to CSB, I can assure you that the commute can be annoying, but it isn't all that bad.  And remember, it may be a necessary step to get to where you want to be.  A little sacrifice now can lead to greater things in the future.  Think outside the box...in terms of travel...and the positions for which you apply.  What are you qualified to do?  How can you take the first step toward the future you desire?
