"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

Thursday's Leads

Mother Teresa
“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.
Life is luck, make it.
Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”

Keep on Rolling: Thursday's Leads

Sometimes it feels as if our most valiant efforts are meaningless, that we are locked in an uphill battle, rolling the proverbial stone up a cliff.

But it is often in those moments, when we can either stick it out or decide to quit, that the best opportunities arise.  Thus, we must continue to push forward despite the adversity, must continue to try even when it all feels hopeless, for it is in those moments that we truly understand our potential and develop a better sense of our capacity.  And it is from those moments that our greatest accomplishments are often forged.

Have a great day!

Tuesday's Leads: Get Your Hands Dirty

Consider the truth in this statement, particularly as a job seeker.  Of course, you don't need to actually get your hands dirty and grimy, but we can't be afraid to do the "dirty work" to get ourselves positioned for a job.  We have to be willing to make the cold calls and drop off the resumes and network with people who can help us, the dirty work of the job search.  Unfortunately, we can't always just sit back and wait for the jobs to come our way (but wouldn't that be nice!), and we can't simply rely on internet applications, where we are but a faceless number.

So don't be afraid to "get your hands dirty."  You could be rewarded with a great career!

Have a great day!

Over the Hump: Wednesday's Leads

Yes, we've made it to the mid-point of another week!

I hope that the first half of your week has been a good one, despite the gloomy weather we've been experiencing.

Nonetheless, there is always room for hope, and there is always a ray of sunshine about to break through even the darkest of clouds.  All we have to do is wait long enough.  Remember, patience is a virtue (or so our parents always told us)!

So keep plugging along and riding the roller coaster of life...and don't forget to apply for a few jobs along the ride!

Have a wonderful Hump Day, and enjoy the ride down the other side!

The Little Job Seeker That Could

I can't help but look at this picture and think of the story "The Little Train That Could."  There are times when we all need to emulate that little train and give ourselves positive affirmations.  We all need to "pysche ourselves up" at times, particularly when faced with adversity.  But we all have the capability to do it...and, if nothing else, it's like that old saying, "You gotta fake it 'til you make it!"
Have a great day!

Make a Professional First Impression

Making a positive first impression is of paramount importance in an interview situation, but there are quite a few other considerations to take into account, both before and after the interview, to send the message that you are a professional.  Check out this article "Five Ways to Say I'm Unprofessional," and examine its message.  Remember that little things like your voicemail message, your email address, and failing to send a thank you note do make an impression, just as much as the bigger ones like mistakes in your resume/cover letter or winging it in the interview.  Even if you're not making these mistakes, the article can help to get you thinking and raise your awareness about making a positive, professional first impression, and that could be the difference in getting the job!

Have a great day!
