"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

No One Will Get a Job for You

I recently read the article "No One Will Get a Job for You," which I found on careerigniter.msn.com.   Though I recommend that you take a moment to read the article, the gist of it is this:  You need to be the one to "take the bull by the horns" and wrestle it to the ground.  Those who are finding success in their job searches are sometimes individuals who approach things differently.  Maybe that means breaking outside your comfort zone--being willing to commute to a job, being more aggressive in interviews and on cover letters, being more confident--and thinking outside the box.  One of the great lines from the article is this one:  "[M]any employers want someone who is proactive and not passive. People who are proactive in their job searches generate more activity than people who wait for interviews to come their way. If you were a hiring manager, wouldn't you want to hire someone who is willing to present solutions, not someone who waits for you to solve his or her problems?"  What can you do differently to position yourself better for a job?  What can you do to finally earn the job you deserve?

Include Company Websites in Your Job Search

I know I've suggested this before, but I think it's worth repeating, maybe making into a refrain if needed:  Be sure that you, as part of your job search, are also looking on specific company websitesIt's very easy to become "locked in" on job seeker search engines (e.g. CareerBuilder, Monster.com) and then forget to look at company websites, which can be problematic if a company is trying to save money and only advertise on their website.

A quick review of some local companies reveals job openings at Dentsply (administrative assistant), York College (PT IT Assistant and also an Administrative Assistant), York County website (legal clerk), and Comcast (a wide array of openings).

I know that our medical students are looking at the websites for Wellspan.org and Memorial Hospital and OSS, but the same should hold true for everyone seeking a job!

Two More Congratulations

Two of our current students, who are both set to go on internship in a few weeks, will be meeting their internship requirements while on the job--and getting paid for it!  Congratulations to Kelly Herbst (MAA) and Dawn Fuhrman (CAM) as both ladies landed jobs with a very respected and established company.  Kelly will be working as a claims representative, and Dawn will be a customer service representative.  See, Ladies, all those painful cold calls and daily company contacts actually did pay off!

Way to go, Kelly and Dawn!

On a related note, when President Obama announced Kelly and Dawn's job successes in a recent speech about the unemployment rate, even Vice President Biden was excited for them both!  How about that fist pump!

Medical Opening, Revisited! Attention, MAA's!!!

As I mentioned to you a few days ago (somewhat discreetly), there is an opening at an eye doctor’s office in East York.  It is now officially listed on Craigslist—see this job posting:  http://york.craigslist.org/hea/2591466709.html  --and the office manager called me asking for candidates.  Remember, this was a position vacated by one of our students who moved on to another job.

The position  would be about 30 hours per week.  You should apply through Craigslist and contact me if you apply.  Then I’ll call the office manager and let her know that you have applied.  That might get your resume/cover letter to the top of the list.  She did, after all, contact us, which indicates they were happy with our student who is leaving.

If you apply, either call me at 764-9550 or email at tbarshinger@csb.edu .

Kudos to Krista Kinard!

Congratulations to Krista Kinard for getting a position as a resident assistant!  When Krista finished her MAA Clinical degree at CSB, she knew she didn't want to work in a doctor's office or a clinical setting.  Instead, she wanted to work with individuals with disabilities or those who were terminally ill (through a hospice provider).  She wanted to use her new-found skills in a different way.  Thus, she looked for jobs and applied in a different manner than many of her MAA counterparts.  The result, after a number of interviews and a lot of applications, is a new job where she knows she'll be making a difference!  We are so happy for you, Krista!

Here We Go Again

I must say that the three-day weekend last week has spoiled me!  It was so depressing to reach 3:00PM this afternoon and realize that the weekend was almost over and it was back to the grind.  But such is life--and we all make due!

In any sense, here are some leads to begin your week!

Congrats, Charla!

Congratulations to Charla Kohler!  She just found out today that she has gotten a job as a medical assistant!  She is a great example of the need to keep trying.  I know there were times in the past few months when she felt as if things weren't going her way.  I know there were times when she doubted herself and her interview skills, but she persevered--and that has led her to a position about which she is extremely excited.  Way to go, Charla!  And thanks for being an inspiration for other job seekers!  We're all so happy for you!

Mobilex Openings

Attention, Students!

A lady who works for Mobilex in Sparks, MD, has contacted me with an open position in that business.  The position is essentially customer service, so you do not need to be a medical student to apply, even though Mobilex deals with medical billing issues.  Mobilex is one of our largest and best employers, and they have hired CAM's, MAA's, COM's, and BAM's.

Obviously, the one drawback is the need to commute, but it is a very nice drive (I've done it).  Additionally, the business campus where the company is located is just beautiful.  Plus, Mobilex starts most of their employees at $14.00 (after all, this isn't York County).

If you have an interest in the position and have reliable transportation, please get in touch with me ASAP.  I told the lady that I'd get her some candidates as soon as I can.

Email me, Tim Barshinger, at tbarshinger@csb.edu .

Attention, Medical Students!!!

One of our graduates is currently working at East York Eye Center on Pleasant Valley Road.  She is leaving in a few weeks for another job she has taken; thus, there will likely be an opening.

Therefore, I suggest you do a resume drop-off or a cold call there.  I don’t recommend that you mention the opening that will be available, but I do recommend that you say you’re simply calling to express interest in any open positionsLet me repeat that:  DO NOT say that you know there will be an opening, but DO express your interest in any positions that may be available now or in the future!  Obviously, we do not want to compromise the position of our student who is still there, so be discreet.

The address for resume drops:  2300 Pleasant Valley Road in York.

The phone number is 755-1993.

Today's Leads

Use Temp Agencies to Your Advantage!

At CSB, we really encourage our students to work with staffing/temp agencies because they can 1)  get positions that sometimes turn into something permanent (esp. if they do a great job)  2) build a larger network of professional acquaintances and 3)  build positive work experience, something that is incredibly important in today’s job market.  This last point, building relevant work experience, is quite important, particularly given the tight job market and the desire that employers have for experience.   You've got to get it somewhere

Working with a personnel or temp agency might just be the ticket to a full-time job!  You never know until you try it...so what have you got to lose?  At the very least it will be another positive move you can make for your career, and it's certainly better than just sitting around doing nothing.  If nothing else, take heart in knowing that we've had quite a few students start their jobs this way!

Give it a try!  Who knows where it can lead!
