New Lead--Office Assistant

I just got a lead from a local company where one of our graduates works.  They are looking for a part-time employee (about 25 hours a week), whose tasks could include stuffing envelopes and organizing mailings, computer data entry, and light inventory.  Other office tasks could be added as the office needs.

Wellspan Training

CSB will be hosting a Wellspan Training opportunity here at school next week.  Wellspan representatives will be on campus for three days--Tuesday, July 31 through Thursday, August 2--for three, one-hour training sessions running from 11:10-12:00pm each day.  The first two sessions are regarding professional phone etiquette and customer service skills.  The third session relates to job hunting and applying to jobs, specifically for Wellspan positions, but in my experience it has also been very informative in relationship to ALL jobs out there!  This third session is run by a Wellspan HR professional, and they are very knowledgeable and helpful!

Participants who take part in the phone and customer service training will receive a certificate of participation--a great portfolio filler and another positive addition to a resume.

Individuals can choose to participate in all three days, only the phone and customer service training (Days 1 and 2), or only the HR tips and techniques (only Day 3).

Any CSB graduates, alumni, or job seekers may participate.  All you need to do to register is contact me via phone (764-9550) or email (tbarshinger@csb.edu) and let me know of your intent to participate and which portions of the program you would like to attend.

I hope that some of you can take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

Thursday's Leads: Can You See Friday Yet?

Can you see Friday yet?

Certainly, we all feel this way at times.  Weeks roll on, and we often find ourselves surviving from week to week, merely living for the weekend.  There's nothing wrong with that sentiment, and it's merely human nature to look ahead to time that we have for ourselves.  But I've always worried that there's a detrimental effect of this way of thinking, too.  I've worried that it speeds up time because we become fixated on that which lies ahead--the weekend, an upcoming vacation, a special holiday--and then we forget to live in the present.  We have to remember the old Roman adage Carpe diem ("Seize the day"), too, for none of us is promised that we'll have a tomorrow.  Accidents and many things that are out of our control can changes our lives in an instant.  Thus, the lesson here is this:  It's fine to look ahead, to plan for the future, to long for the weekend...but we can't forget to  enjoy each day that we have, to live in the present.

Attention, Fall 2012 Graduates

Fall 2012 CSB Graduates,    

We have scheduled the Fall 2012 CSB Graduation for Friday, November 9, at 7:00pm, at Wisehaven Banquet and Expo Center, 2985 East Prospect Street, York, PA.  Graduates will need to arrive at 6:15 in order to prepare for seating and other pre-ceremony preparations.  

More details will be mailed to you in the coming weeks, but I wanted to at least give you an update so you could "save the date."

Congratulations!!!

Congratulations are in order for three CSB graduates who have recently gotten jobs!

Nina Rascoe, a business administration graduate, got a job as an administrative assistant at a wonderful company.  Her work will surely have a positive effect on many York County residents.

Junior Santos, another business administration graduate, got a job as an office assistant at a local business that helps youth in need.  He will certainly be doing good work to help others.

Tasheika Kennedy, a graduate with a degree in computerized office management, got a job as a customer service representative with a good local company.  Surely, this will be just the first of many good steps for Tasheika!

In all, I just wanted to congratulate these three individuals and wish them well as they start their careers.

Way to go!



Wednesday's Leads: Keeping Grounded


Unfortunately, we've all had days where we feel just like this donkey.  Our workloads, our commitments, our unfulfilled expectations weigh us down and threaten to overwhelm us.  The key in those situations is to focus on that which we can handle.  Little by little, piece by piece, we must keep chipping away at that which seems overwhelming, all the while realizing that we can't just eliminate a huge obstacle without careful and deliberate work.  I see this every day with my four-year-old son.  When instructed to clean up the messes that he makes, he often balks, and a lot of it seems to stem from his feeling of being overwhelmed.  When we break down the job into smaller steps, he can handle it and does a good job with cleaning up.  Maybe all of us need to do that little more when faced with an overwhelming task.  Maybe we just need to break it down into pieces so we can conquer the challenge--and so we aren't letting the challenge conquer us.

Just Keep Going: Tuesday's Leads


This quotation is vital for all job seekers.  I have seen numerous examples in the last year and a half of students who succeeded, despite difficulty, simply because they "just kept going."

The easy thing in any situation is to give up and walk away, and that is true with a job search, with a difficult marriage, with a disagreement with a friend, or with virtually any other situation where we face adversity.  The less popular and more difficult path is to keep going, to keep fighting.  But the rewards and satisfaction are so much greater when we do succeed under those circumstances, for we have earned it and we have a much greater appreciation of what we've accomplished.

So the inherent lesson, then, is never to give up.  Keep fighting, keep trying, and keep plugging away!  It is in such adversity that our true identity and our greatest achievements are forged.  Let's remember that even diamonds are formed under intense pressure.  Perhaps that adversity, that "pressure," is needed to help us create something of great value in our lives.

I've been doing some reading about adversity and overcoming challenges recently, and these three quotations echo much of what I've read.  They all offer the idea that we are often too pessimistic and don't see opportunities when they present themselves.  Likewise, they all encompass the idea that there is much to be learned from challenges; we just have to find the lesson in the obstacle.

I saw this picture on a graduate's Facebook page, and I thought it was so appropriate for job seekers.  Like the dog in the picture, we all need to demonstrate patience, the patience to "wait out" the storm and understand that no potential employer moves at the speed we want them to move.  We need wisdom, too; wisdom to know what we can control in the job search process--and then to control those variables. And wisdom, too, to realize that sometimes there are elements we cannot control, and we cannot let them discourage us or get us down.

A Smart Approach for Struggling Job Seekers

I had a great discussion with a former CSB student this morning, and we talked about the challenge with finding a job.  I was so happy with our discussion because this student demonstrated a flexibility in thinking and approach that I sometime see lacking in our students.  In this student's quest to land a job in his or her field, he or she hadn't previously considered using the "stepping stone" approach to get to the desired position. Perhaps today more than ever, with the economy still in the tank and employers unwilling to add new positions, this approach has relevance.  More often than not, students think that they will step out of school and go right into their "dream position," but evidence supports otherwise.  Even back in April when we had our Career Day speakers into the school, it was very clear that many of the speakers had moved multiple times in their careers, sometimes within their starting companies, sometimes to an entirely new company.  The important thing for the student with whom I had the discussion this morning--and for all of you--is that you understand that it might take a few steps to get to where you want to be.  But remember that  you can't get there if you don't have a starting point.  Every job that you have builds more work experience, and I always say, too, that you are more employable with a job in hand than when you don't have one.  It is, after all, always easier to get a job when you already have one.

Thus, I hope that this example with this student, and that student's flexible thinking and career-building approach, can help those of you who might be struggling with your search.  I think this student has found the key to unlocking doors that were previously closed, and I believe it is now just a matter of time until he or she gets the desired position!

The Man in the Arena--and a Load of Leads
