"Look at the donut, not the hole." ...age-old advice from one of my former coaches, reminding us to look at what we have, not what we don't

Remember, Babe Ruth may have been one of the great homerun hitters of all time, but he also struck out a lot, too. The job search is just like that, especially in this economy. Keep getting back up there and swinging for the fence!

A Smart Approach for Struggling Job Seekers

Open your mind, and who knows what will grow!
I had a great discussion with a former CSB student this morning, and we talked about the challenge with finding a job.  I was so happy with our discussion because this student demonstrated a flexibility in thinking and approach that I sometime see lacking in our students.  In this student's quest to land a job in his or her field, he or she hadn't previously considered using the "stepping stone" approach to get to the desired position. Perhaps today more than ever, with the economy still in the tank and employers unwilling to add new positions, this approach has relevance.  More often than not, students think that they will step out of school and go right into their "dream position," but evidence supports otherwise.  Even back in April when we had our Career Day speakers into the school, it was very clear that many of the speakers had moved multiple times in their careers, sometimes within their starting companies, sometimes to an entirely new company.  The important thing for the student with whom I had the discussion this morning--and for all of you--is that you understand that it might take a few steps to get to where you want to be.  But remember that  you can't get there if you don't have a starting point.  Every job that you have builds more work experience, and I always say, too, that you are more employable with a job in hand than when you don't have one.  It is, after all, always easier to get a job when you already have one.

Thus, I hope that this example with this student, and that student's flexible thinking and career-building approach, can help those of you who might be struggling with your search.  I think this student has found the key to unlocking doors that were previously closed, and I believe it is now just a matter of time until he or she gets the desired position!

Espero que tengas un buen fin de semana!

(Yes, I had to use a translator for that...I only knew the "fin de semana" part myself!)
